In 1822, the future founder of the brand, the Catalan Jose Hener, purchased several plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region. Today, this region is considered the cradle of the best tobacco varieties in the world. His favorite terroir, the most beautiful plot according to Hener, took the name of Hoyo de Monterrey (Monterrey Valley), and this name therefore later gave the name to the brand of cigars.

 

Jose Hener was well aware of the quality of the yields from his plantations. However, this backfired – he was unable to find manufacturers who would buy tobacco from him for the price he wanted. Therefore, José finally decided to open his own factory for the production of cigars.
